Fun in Nairobi

Penny, Greg and I have had fun in Nairobi. The weather is like Toowoomba was before we left. It is fairly overcast and quite cool at night. Right now Greg has a blanket over him while he is lying on the couch at 10.30am. It is just the two if us! We will enjoy that for a day. I must add it was not hard work living with the team for the 16 days in South Sudan.  It was great to be with such cooperative and thoughtful people.
Warwick flew out on Monday night. On Tuesday Abraham took Sarah and Esther back to her home here then flew out that night. Penny was safely checked in with Air Kenya when we left her last night.

On Tuesday, Penny, Greg and I went to the Giraffe Centre and hand fed a giraffe. They are graceful creatures. Then we visited Karen Blixen’s house from “Out of Africa” fame. James, our driver, recommended we have dinner at the Carnivore Restaurant. As the name suggests meat is the focus. There is a huge cooking area with spit roasts. After an entree of wedges and corn cob, plus soup, the waiters came with meat on a spit and served it onto your plate. There were 7 or 8 different sauces to accompany the meats. Vegetables did not feature – just a baked potato. You can see the flag in the photo. When you can eat no more, you put down the flag in defeat. We made it through chicken, turkey, crocodile, ox balls, camel, and pork spare ribs, beef sausage, ostrich meat balls, roast pork, lamb and beef, chicken livers. We conceded defeat.  The service was excellent.

Wednesday we went to the Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage. They open only one hour a day. The babies are treated like humans. They pine and die without their mothers. Keepers are with them 24 hours a day – even have a bed for the keeper up higher in each stable where the elephants sleep at night. They were quite playful and loved having their bottle of milk. Each has story of how they were orphaned but poaching is the major issue.
From there we went to the Safari Walk at Nairobi National Park. They have a select number of animals which our guide told us all about. The safari walk is a sure way to actually glimpse the animals. Again – an enjoyable experience.

Today, Thursday, is a rest day. It is good to be still.
